I have often been intrigued by the memoirs of authors with whom I may have something in common. Perhaps it is simply a form of voyeurism, but I really believe I am hoping to gain insight into my own life. As a boy, I was not socialized that sharing my anguish was a virtue, and it fact was more a liability and a sign of weakness and , God forbid, a "feminine" trait! No self-respecting man would focus on his pain and sorrow, yet alone allow himself to be sufficiently vulnerable to share that with others!Mr. O'Sullivan has, in "A Green One For Woody", provided his readers with a glimpse into the sorrows and struggles of a young boy with a self-destructive, alcoholic father who squandered the blessings of good looks, intelligence and athletic prowess. This is much more than simply another coming of age tale, or that of the ravages of addiction. It helped me understand that I am likely profoundly ignorant of the forces that have impacted the lives of those around me. Mr. O'Sullivan's courage in writing this book is an inspiration. Yes, he did have academic and athletic success and a wonderful family in spite of the odds stacked against him. What impresses me most, however, is that he had the courage to defy the stereotype and share how profoundly his pain impacted virtually every aspect of his life. It would have been easy for the author to perpetuate the myth that he had been blessed with the "perfect" family, but instead he has shown me that the greatest risk in hiding our true selves is the resultant delay in healing.

To say it is a quick and easy read would not do this book justice. The reason it reads quickly is that it is hard to put down, even on the third time through. For a memoir, it is extremely well written and characters are well developed in the short time frame in which they are important to the story.
Having grown up in the same era and area, the common threads took me back in time very easily.....thankfully without the pain which the author endured.
Great book. Mr. O'Sullivan has a way of turning a phrase, providing an insight, being painfully honest about tough subjects, using humor, profanity and titillation when appropriate, describing people, places and events so that visual images are formed, weaving small and large themes and threads through the book, etc. One of the most entertaining books I've read. It would have been nice to see photos of some of the places and people whom Mr. O'Sullivan describes.
Having myself led a sheltered life and being fortunate to only observe alcoholism's effect on families second hand, this was an eye-opening view into a very personal story that covers the tragedies, the victories, and the long unpleasant times in between, when neither conclusion is clear.
Hopefully, the author can turn his writing talents to other projects, stories, and characters.
Just finished "A Green One for Woody",a beautifully written story of a tragic situation. The personal story of a boy growing up in a dysfunctional family and struggling to find his way to adulthood. Sadness, humor, and perseverance lead to a fascinating journey.
A Green One for Woody is honest, involving and colorful. It's a memorable life story and wonderful storytelling! I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Congratulations, Mr. O'Sullivan!
This book has something for everyone. Especially if you're looking for a story that evokes the full range of emotions, from laughing out loud to crying tears, this one's for you. That the author was, as an adult, in a position to even tell this story with such perspective and wit is a testimony to the power of a lot of love and at least a little bit of structure in a child's life that is otherwise wrought with hardship and tragedy. Any parent raising a child in less than ideal circumstances will find reassurance and hope in this story and anyone growing up in the 60's and 70's will be stimulated to reminisce events surrounding their own childhood and coming of age.
I was quickly drawn into the life and times of Mr. O'Sullivan as it reflected my own timeline. The parallel of his life experiences to historical events of the 60's and 70's resonated with me and jarred my own memories of those times. His personal story was painful, poetic and fun, as life often is. Patrick O'Sullivan accomplishes what a great writer should, he evokes tears and laughter and his story touches the soul, leaving the reader with much to think about after the last page is read. This book is more than a "must read" it is a treasure, one I will keep and read again and again.
This is a gripping story of a child moving along to manhood and the family tragedies he encountered along the way. The author infuses enough humor and light hearted passages to make it a well rounded story. The descriptions of the characters and places are so well done that they are like seeing a photograph. The author memoirs are triggered by family information discovered in his Great Grandmother's belongings after her death and proceeds through living in a dysfunctional family characterized by an alcoholic father. Mr. O'Sullivan's masterful writing skills made it difficult to put his book down until finished.
